Judy Selogy Biography

Art is the lens through which I see life. Born and raised in Denver, Colorado into a family of sports lovers and engineers, I was the only girl of five children and was always seen as the oddball.

I loved using color pencils or that funky watercolor set that only came with primary colors and a really bad brush. To this day, the smell of crayons brings me right back to color by number coloring books and grade school.

While in a junior high art class the teacher mixed a flesh tone and to me it was like watching a magic trick. High school brought love affair with the potter’s wheel and I managed to tuck in a couple of drawing and oil painting courses along with the expected academic classes.

Marriage came and went. Art became dormant during this period and almost completely disappeared under the weight of a difficult relationship.

Divorce altered everything. As I went back into the work force pursuing art was the last thing on my mind. While working at a temp job, an old habit resurfaced in the form of doodling. It began a series of stylized pen and ink drawings. After landing a permanent job the love of painting reemerged. Intense satisfaction followed with each new piece. I landed my first commission piece, obtained a business license and my website. Now, I head up a weekly art group fostering encouragement, support and practical teaching.

Judy Selogy Statement

I never know where inspiration will come from, and I can’t predict when it will show up. Randomly and with little regard for what’s going on in my life, ideas come to me. Nature, personal hardships, relationships, travel, viewing art, hearing music or anything else you can imagine could play a part in sparking. Capturing fleeting emotions, a barely discernible atmosphere or some essence on canvas is what I do. People relate to these things and in the process discover that artistic expression speaks to some of the deepest parts of their being.  I live to witness the moment when someone connects with one of my pieces.
