Class: YOU Can Cartoon! With Christopher Griffin
A beginner's course in cartooning for teens and adults, these sessions include group discussion topics and one or two exercises, depending on complexity. One of the goals for this series will be to collect no less than two completed works, whether single panel cartoons, drawings (inked, ideally), or comic strips from each student, for the group “zine”*.
CARTOONING HISTORY OVERVIEW: Let’s start with sharing what we like. What have you felt yourself respond to the strongest? What are you a fan of and why…and how would you draw something similarly? Various drawing materials will be demonstrated as needed.
DRAWING BASICS: Perspective, figure, line, tone, rhythm and composition.
CHARACTER CONSTRUCTION: How do we put together, using only a few ink lines, memorable characters?
LETTERING: Hand lettering lends personality and unifies your drawing since it is part of your drawing.
SEQUENTIAL ART: A discussion on comics, animation and their origins and special language.
JUXTAPOSITION: In this session we get very experimental and run through some fun creativity exercises.
GROUP WORKSHOP AND ZINE FINALIZATION: Deadline to hand in art for the group zine (details will be worked out in prior class meetups) Otherwise this session will be improvised: Will it be a comics jam? Shall we draw caricatures of each other? Ideas are welcome!
Definition of zine: MAGAZINE
especially : a noncommercial often homemade or online publication usually devoted to specialized and often unconventional subject matter.
